Announcement re Met Multiplier and Breeders Bonus

Friday, July 31, 2020

The very successful Met Multiplier and Breeders bonus schemes introduced by the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club in 2014 were suspended at the close of racing in March and this has been extended for the foreseeable future. This is in part a result of a change in funding policy from Harness Racing New Zealand.

“We have been delighted with the success of both incentive schemes since we introduced them and our average field size has reflected the need for these types of promotions, said Addington Raceway CEO Brian Thompson. It clearly encouraged horses to start more often at Addington which not only benefits the club but the entire harness industry as we need our horses to start more often”.

Since the inception of the schemes they have injected close to $1,700,000 through the Met Multiplier, with over two hundred and thirty horses qualifying and over twelve hundred horses have shared in over $600,000 from the Breeders bonus. “One of the Met Multiplier’s best attributes is that the bonus was shared by the owners and trainers which provided them with much needed funds to reinvest in the sport”.

Addington have not counted out a return to one or both schemes in the future, but this will only be possible if or when the funding model allows this.
