Barry Ward’s belief in the Clem Scott breed

West Melton horseman Barry Ward believed in the Clem (CC) Scott breed as much as  the pioneer Southland breeder and educator of standardbreds did.

In fact, when the former stud-master of ‘Evensong Farm’ relocated to Christchurch, Ward worked for him, and soon realised just how powerful his breed was… and could be.

Then he pestered his boss to see if he could breed a foal from the family line of the 1967 Lumber Dream – Forenoon (U Scott) mare, Wee Ann.

“Clem had a daughter out of Wee Ann. I really wanted to breed from, and he relented. Her name was Out Of Time (1982 Out To Win three-win mare). I actually bought Out of Time. She never raced, lost an eye, and was not broken in I am sure.

“Apparently, Wee Ann was a ferocious animal and would kick you as quick as look at you, but she was the best from the family. She was a very speedy pacer, and I knew any female from her family had the potential to breed on well.

“Out Of Time was her 10^th foal (of 17). When Clem did finally let me breed from her, I put her to Clever Innocence. I was rapt because I did a lot of homework on the family and I knew they would produce winners,” Ward said.

“I remember Clem always telling me that the dam always made the family. Wee Ann was his best and I am still delighted today to have bred some quality racehorses from the family.

“Clem was right. The dam side will eventually shine through if she’s any good.”

Ward’s Clever Innocence – Out Of Time cross produced the  1990 10-win ($85,865) mare Time’s On My Side. She was the first and best of the 10 foals Ward bred out of the mare.

“Because Out Of Time was a 1966 Keith Richards and Mick Jaggar song, I decided to carry the music and song theme on in our breed,” Ward said Bob Dylan produced Times They Are A Changin’.

Fifty-nine years after that song was released, Ward’s equine version has won at the at Mt Harding Racecourse in Methven.

TIMES ARE A CHANGIN

Sunday January 29th Out Of Time’s great-grandson, Times Are A Changin’ (Rock N Roll Heaven – Paradise City – Bettor’s Delight) won the fourth race – the Oamaru Club R35-39 Pace. The 5-year-old mare was trained his co-owner and breeder, Ward. Blair Orange did the driving.

“Ann Maree co-owns and co-bred the mare. Anne Maree does a huge amount of work at the stable, business, and with our three teenage children.

We are delighted with this mare. That was her fourth win ($34,425) now,” Ward said.

He said Times Are A Changin’ was the last of three foals out of Paradise City (Bettor’s Delight – Child In Time (In The Pocket)) a six-win $197,576 mare.

“Paradise City’s first foal, the (2014) Mach Three mare, Angel Of Harlem mare would run her close, but Paradise City was a very special racehorse.

“We were gutted when she died foaling to Sweet Lou in 2019. The vet couldn’t get here in time and there was lots of panicking and sadness when she did pass. I never got over it really.

“She was a lovely animal, who could have bred a few more winners. She won the Group One Caduceus Club Classic in Auckland and then a week later placed in another Group One (2yo Fillies Championship).”

He said Angel Of Harlem (1:55) won three races here before he sold her to Australia, where she finished her career on May 3, 2019, the winner of 11 of her 33 starts and $207,594.

“She had an amazing turn of foot and is right up there with her mother as the best I’ve had . . , so far. She had several gears and could cruise when you wanted her to and then when you hit the go button, she just took off. She was a Breeder’s Crown runner up and won a couple of Group races over there,” Ward said.

(Our) Angel of Harlem foaled her first foal, an American Ideal coly in December.

The only other foal out of Paradise City was the 2016 Mach Three entire, Bow River. Ward sold him at the yearling sales and since had two races in 2021 in WA.

Ward said Times Are A Changinhas  had 54 starts now and believed there were a few wins left in her yet.

“She’s not as good as his mother or older sister but she is genuine. She’s the only female I’ve got left out of her late mother, so Clem’s breed will still live on through her,” Ward said.

He said he was also breeding from several other mares on his farm, including the 13-win ($120,556) 2011  Bettor’s Delight – Time’s On My Side (Clever Innocence) mare, Bird Of Paradise.

Ward said she had an Always B Miki colt last season and a Vincent colt at foot. He is also breeding from (Bettor’s Delight – Time’s On My Side), Bird of Paradise and Going to California (Art Major – Child In Time).

“I think to summarise I would say that Time’s On My Side had an amazing record as a broodmare. She only left good horses. Several won 10 or more, while Bird of Paradise  and Child in Time won more than $100,000.”

Ward had another win in late December at Banks Peninsular with Hey Tonight (2017 5 B m A Rocknroll Dance – Wonderful Tonight – Red River Hanover) another granddaughter of Time’s On My Side.
