One Over or One Under ……it doesn’t matter really !

Loveyou To Da Skye’s recent Addington win for trainer & part owner Gavin Smith has just added another chapter in the story (& legacy) of Pointer Hanover mare Frances Jay Bee and what a journey it has been.
The latter won six races before embarking on a broodmare career that would leave an indelible mark on the NZ Trotting landscape and recent events suggest that the story is far from finished.
From the unraced Lordship mare Lady Afton, the last of 12 foals of Lida Lisa (for 2 minor winners), Frances Jay Bee would rate as a half to the speedy Raymauwarrhen Son (by Sundon + 22 wins + $146k) but nothing at that point in the early 90s hinted at such rich successes to follow.

Loveyou to Da Sky – with Trainer/Driver Gavin Smith who is also a part owner
Some would remember Pointer Hanover racing out of the Washdyke stable of George Shand, racing against the likes of Scotch Tar, No Response & About Now. Most of the time, he would have been chasing such horses but he did manage to win 14 races (& 24 placings) in 106 starts & close to $48k in the late 70s/early 80s.
Frances Jay Bee was an immediate success at stud.
Her first foal One Kenny won a total of 19 races (2 in Australia) and his 82 starts brought in $110k.
She had a special affinity with Sundon. Foal no.2 One Under Kenny won 11 races from 34 starts and she then bred on leaving several good winners including $100k+ performers in Kenny’s Dream (8 wins) & One Majic Kenny (7 wins). Her current crop of grand- daughters are continuing on the family success.
Foal three, aptly named Shouldn’t Do It, by pacing sire Holmes Hanover, won 1 race in a short career but her North Otago owners realised that decision wasn’t a good move & went back to Sundon for foals numbered four and five.
One Over Kenny (#4) won 32 races from 66 attempts including 6 in Australia and won in excess of $1M in stakes. A multiple Group 1 winner at the highest level, she too has been an excellent producer leaving the likes of One Over Da Moon (22 wins & now successful sire), Ultimate Stride (11 wins from only 20 starts) & current star One Over All (25 wins & counting). Throw in another 5 winners & several high-priced yearling sales and the ‘family’ was now well on the way to being labelled ‘highly commercial’.
Nice One Kenny (#5) won two in a 9 race career but then left Queen Kenny (9 wins) 2nd up who has gone on to leave none other than top mare Queen Elida (34 wins) who is shaping up as the next millionaire on the family tree.
All in all, Frances Jay Bee produced 9 live foals for 7 winners of 68 races & close to $1.3M in stakes.
And now daughters of her daughters are continuing the legacy.
One Over Da Skye (Majestic Son – One Over Kenny) won 5 races and is now the dam of Loveyou To Da Skye, her first foal and the recent winner from the Smith stable
One Over Da Stars (Love You – One Over Kenny) also won 5 races & has already left $110k+ performer in Look To Da Stars (first foal) for Purdon Racing.
The first 3 foals from One Two Kenny (Great Success – One Under Kenny) are all winners & the commercial success of this family just rolls on.
In 2018, a colt from One Over Kenny by Love You brought $160k and 7 years later in 2025, the half brother to Queen Elida (What The Hill – Queen Kenny) was knocked down to Stonewall stud for $170..
And there have been many prominent beneficiaries of the Frances Jay Bee stock. Lex & the late Heather Williams, the Williamson family (a young Phil Williamson used to drive the mare on raceday), Tony Barron & the Baynes family have all benefited from being connected to the bonny mare who got her start in the back blocks of North Otago.
This is just a great tale and there is much more in store it would seem.
